Aug 20,

Bro. D. Augustine Jebakumar was born on 20th August in a simple Christian Family in the town of Tuticorin in South India. After taking a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, he started working in the English Electric Co., at Chennai.

Augustine Jebakumar, at the age of 21, he enthusiastically got involved in street preaching and child evangelism and was working mainly among street children. It was in the year that he had an encounter with the Lord through a vision, which made him resign his job and completely surrender to the clarion call of the Lord with implicit obedience. He then came to Bihar, a State that was known as the “Graveyard of Missionaries”. He undertook his missionary journey with great challenge and landed in Bihar soil on 13th October without knowing the language and culture of the State. The Lord took him in different paths and used him to establish the ministry under the banner of Gospel Echoing Missionary Society (GEMS), now working in the States of Bihar, Utter Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkand, Nepal and Maharastra, with a band of ± workers.

His major role in the Kingdom of God is reviving the churches and reaching the unreached with the love of Christ. He travels extensively.

Augustine Jebakumar was chosen, anointed and sent to an area that was called as ‘graveyard of missionaries’ to transform it into ‘vineyard of missions.  His autobiography is a delightful book providing a grand picture of God’s faithfulness, grace, power, majesty that could be revealed to the world through ‘one person’ who is willing to be obedient.  A book I cherished reading as one of my forerunners, his life experiences certainly have several parallels with my own life.

Born in godly family, Augustine was taught to read the bible when he was just three-and-a-half years old.  (page 8) His early family background were not easy and they went to through bitter experiences, where relatives who were beneficiaries did not show any gratitude.  However, Augustine writes that God led him through ‘narrow path of selflessness’.  In early childhood, they lived in a neighbourhood that was not stable, infested with criminals; which Augustine understands as preparation for his life as a missionary in Bihar.  Due to various circumstances, he had to be content with studying in a Polytechnic instead of doing bachelor’s in engineering.  Without knowing the Lord personally, he was active in church.

Landing in a good job, with good salary and having a good loving parents and siblings did not give satisfaction.  While wondering why he did not have ‘peace’; he heard a whisper in his ears: ‘The wicked have no peace’.  While Augustine tried to explain that he was not a sinner like others who drink, tease girls; not spendthrift; a vision appeared before his eyes, like a movie every hidden ugly evil thought appeared.  He understood: ‘what a wretched sinner I am and have no right to li

They called him ‘Augustine’ because he was born in the month of August and they called him, ‘Jebakumar’ because he was the fruit of their prayers.
    Childhood
Jebakumar’s father was an Indian air force personnel and his mother Joy Florinal was a teacher by profession. His parents were very particular about their son Jebakumar to an extet that right from his early days he grew up with strict Christian disciplines. So, they taught him virtues like integrity, discipline, orderliness, austerity, and sacrificial – service. His mother being a teacher taught him to read bible when he was only three and a half years old and when he was five years old, she would not give him his morning coffee unless and until he reads a chapter from the bible. When he was seven years old, he had to tell her the gist of pastor’s sermon delivered in the Sunday service. Every Sunday he had to memorize and recite a brief prayer from a prayer book and a chapter from the bible.
During his childhood, Jebakumar witnessed many atrocities perpetrated by caste-fanatics and saw how it spews out venomous hatred and vengeance against the harmony of people and this sowed the seed of missionary vision in his heart. With a very specific call Rev. D. Augustine Jebakumar came to Bihar in the year Oct , which was then known as the "Graveyard of Missionaries". The Lord started moving in a marvelous way in different places of Bihar, connecting people from South India also. During a registered society was formed to concentrate on North India with a special emphasis in Bihar, which in turn brought stations with Worshipping centers today in Bihar, Jharkand, Utter Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The activities of this society are primarily community care and humanitarian service via educational services and medical services. Later social services were added in order to cater to the needs of people.

Working in 27 Districts of Bihar alone, we have established about 11 English Medium Schools, Hindi Medium Schools (Day Care Centers), above 50 Homes for Children, which made an impact in the whole State.

We have workers from North India (mainly people who were transformed by the love of the Lord) along with South Indians (1/3 of the total force) and right now we have over people[as on Mar'13] who get support on various levels.

South Indian Churches and Prayer Groups mainly support the workers, whereas our friends from overseas and other agencies support our social work, major buildings and donate vehicles.
