Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata was born on 29 July to an Indian Parsi family in Paris, France. He was the second child of businessman Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and his French wife, Suzanne "Sooni" Brière. His father was the first cousin of Jamsetji Tata, a pioneer industrialist in India. He had one elder sister Sylla, a younger sister Rodabeh and two younger brothers Darab and Jamshed (called Jimmy) Tata. His sister, Sylla, was married to Dinshaw Maneckji Petit, the third baronet of Petits. His sister's sister-in-law, Rattanbai Petit, was the wife of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who later became the founder of Pakistan in August
As his mother was French, he spent much of his childhood in France and as a result, French was his first language. He attended the Janson De Sailly School in Paris. One of the teachers at that school mistaken him for being Egyptian and used to call him L'Egyptien. Tata's family also purchased a house on the beach in Neufchâtel-Hardelot where the family would sometimes live until Tata was also neighbors with Louis Bleriot.
Tata attended the Cathedral and Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, also known as JRD Tata, was born in France to an Indian businessman and one of the wealthiest families in India. His mother was French, so he spent most of his childhood in France. French was his first language. During a childhood summer vacation, he met aviation pioneer Sir Louis Bleriot. This meeting triggered his interest in aircraft and flying, which became his longtime passion and stayed with him forever. JRD Tata intended to pursue an engineering degree at the University of Cambridge in the UK, but returned to India to carry forward his role in the Tata family’s business. JRD Tata was born on 29 July to Indian businessman Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata. As his mother was French, JRD Tata spent much of his time in France. JRD Tata was educated in London, Japan, France and Mumbai. After the death of his wife, Ratanji Dadabhoy moved his family to India and sent JRD Tata to England for higher studies. However, being a citizen of France, JRD Tata had to enlist in the French army for at least a year. He spent a brief period at home in Bombay in between attending school and working with the army. In , JRD Tata renounced his French citizenship and became an Indian citizen. He later joined the Tata family business. In , JRD Tata married Thelma Vicaji, his lawyer whom he hired to defend himself on charges of driving a car too fast on a Bombay road. JRD Tata was the first person in India to own a flying licence. He was certified on 10 February , and became known as the father of Indian civil aviation. JRD Tata founded Indias first commercial airline, Tata Airlines, in , which subsequently became known as Air India. In , JRD Tata received a commercial pilot licence. In , Tata Airlines took to the sky. In that year, JRD Tata flew his first commercial flight. The first flight in Indian history flew from Drigh in Karachi to Madras under JRD T Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata is born in Paris, the second of four children of Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (Jamsetji Tata’s first cousin) and his wife, Suzanne Briere. The Tatas purchase a house on the beach in Hardelot, France, where the young ‘Jeh’, as he is fondly known, is enthralled by their neighbour, aviator Louis Bleriot. The family alternates between Bombay and Paris until JRD is drafted into the French Army for a year. In , RD Tata summons his son back to India. In India, he spends a year learning the ropes in Jamshedpur. When his father passes away the same year, JRD is brought on to the Board of Directors in Tata Sons. JRD Tata becomes the first person to qualify for a pilot’s licence in India, and holds Private Licence No. 1. JRD Tata marries Thelma Vicaji, affectionately known as ‘Thelly’. The intrepid aviator competes in The Aga Khan’s air race between England and India, and comes in second after a legendary display of sportsmanship towards competitor — and winner — Aspy Engineer in Alexandria, Egypt. Tata Airlines, the seed of the idea that would grow to become Air India, is founded after tremendous effort by JRD Tata. He pilots the inaugural flight from Karachi to Bombay — which he describes as the moment “a dream became a reality”. JRD is appointed Chairman of Tata Sons; at age 34, he is the youngest chairman to ever be appointed. Along with other leaders, like GD Birla, Purshottamdas Thakurdas, Ardeshir Dalal and John Mathai, JRD Tata formulates the Bombay Plan, a long-term strategy for India’s economic development after World War II. The same year, he sets up the JRD Tata Trust. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is established through the efforts of JRD Tata and Dr Homi J Bhabha, in their endeavour to build a superior institute o It is a measure of the man and the life he lived that long before his demise, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata came to represent an exalted idea of Indianness: progressive, benevolent, ethical and compassionate. It did not really matter that the country itself failed this utopian test. JRD, as he was known to commoner and king, had by then transcended the frailties of his milieu. As an adolescent, JRD loved France and flying more than anything else. By the time he stepped into the autumn of his existence, he had devoted some 50 years to heading and defining a unique business conglomerate, and just as long to championing the interests of India and her myriad people. The evolution, from a thoughtful if self-indulgent young man to a pan-Indian icon revered even by those who knew little about business, contains the essence of the JRD story. Being one of the last of the great patriarchs of Indian industry contributed, no doubt, to the moulding of his legend, but to call JRD an industrialist is akin to saying Mahatma Gandhi was a freedom fighter. He considered his leadership of the Tata group and his dedication to the cause of India as complementary, and he brought to the two undertakings a rare dignity and sense of purpose. It is said of JRD that he spoke French better than English and both better than any Indian language. That did not preclude him from forging a special bond with Indians of all ages and backgrounds. Kalpana Chawla, the Indian-born astronaut who perished in the Columbia space shuttle disaster, cited JRD and his pioneering airmail flights as her inspiration for taking up aeronautics. He touched the lives of countless others, rich and poor, manager and worker, as he became Works and Achievements of JRD Tata
