Adam Rubin

Adam Rubin is the New York Times bestselling author of a half dozen children&#;s picture books. Adam&#;s books are illustrated by the talented Daniel Salmieri.

Adam says, &#;I became a picture-book author by accident. When I found myself with the opportunity to work with this incredibly talented guy who wanted to be a picture-book illustrator, I knew I had to write something in that genre.

I went to the library and read a bunch of picture books to re-familiarize myself with the medium. There were a few books I liked, but most were saccharine, didactic or just plain boring. I decided to just write something I thought was funny.&#;

&#;I’m not sure what the key to writing good children’s books is, but I think one important thing is not to talk down to the kids. I try to write a story that makes Daniel and me laugh and use language that kids can understand.&#;

Adam and Daniel&#;s comforting harmony of unique sensibilities has won fans young and old.

During the day Adam Rubin works as creative director at a fancy digital advertising agency in New York City.

At night, Adam indulges his hobbies as a puzzle collector and magic trick aficionado.

Adam Rubin is a #1 New York Times best selling author of children's books. Many of his stories feature animals or food and several contain interactive elements. His books have sold over one million copies. Rubin graduated from Washington University in St. Louis where he studied advertising and worked as an advertising creative director for ten years before leaving his day job to focus on writing books. Adam also has a background in Improv where he taught classes at iO Theater in Chicago and in New York at the Annoyance Theatre. In addition to writing and improv, he also curates and designs puzzles and magic tricks.

I write a variety of things but let me start off by telling you about The Ice Cream Machine and The Human Kaboom. Each is a collection of six different stories with the same exact name. The goal of these books is to encourage young readers to become young writers, which I discuss in more detail during this NPR interview and Reddit AMA.

My career as an author started with a trio of picture books called Those Darn Squirrels. At this point, I've written fifteen books in total, including: Secret Pizza Party, Robo-Sauce, Gladys the Magic Chicken, El Chupacabras (que es bilingüe) and, most recently, The Truth About the Couch.

Seven of my books have been national bestsellers and a handful have won some awards but one has kind of taken on a life of its own, selling millions of copies and inspiring countless children's birthday parties. It's called Dragons Love Tacos and believe me, I'm just as surprised by its popularity as you are.

At this point, I should probably mention that I made a separate kid-friendly site with no mild profanity in the URL, specifically for fans of children's literature. Students, teachers, and young authors can find a variety of writing tips there as well.

In addition to writing books, I am also the proprietor of a curiosity shop in Brooklyn called Art of Play. It is a magical place full of spinning tops and kaleidoscopes and handmade japanese puzzle boxes. We may or may not have a close-up magic theatre hidden in the back (shhh).

I love creating magic tricks and frequently work behind-the-scenes with world famousmagicians. I'm best known for redesigning classic optical illusions as functional home goods or sculptural astonishments.

My most recent book is called The Truth About the Couch. I got to collaborate with the legendary Argentinian cartoonist Liniers and went on Good Morning America to chat about the story with George Stephanopoulos (sp?).

I'm very proud of my two collections of short fiction The Human Kaboom and The Ice Cream Machine. Each book contains six totally different stories with the same exact name. People have described these books as "exhilarating" or "impossible to resist" and I'm only slightly embarrassed to tell you that they debuted at #1 & #2 on the New York Times bestsellers list. Bragging rights aside, my real goal in writing these books was to encourage young readers to express their own creativity. I recorded a short series of writing tips to share with aspiring authors. Hundreds of kids have since sent me their stories and I've begun to publish my favorites in the paperback versions of my books.

My life as an author began with picture books. The most popular one is called Dragons Love Tacos but the others are pretty good too. I'm particularly fond of Gladys the Magic Chicken (illustrated by Adam Rex). The book trailer has a catchy jingle and live chickens.
