Monali Thakur was born in New Delhi, India. Her mother is Janaki Thakur, and her father is Abhimanyu Thakur. She has an elder sister named Nandani Thakur. Monali was always fascinated by entertainment from a very young age. Her father started caring for her as soon as she entered the world. He initially worked for a construction company before he left his job to take care of his children. Monali had been her father’s inspiration for wanting to sing about his native place – Gairatpur and the people who live there.
He was convinced that if he could make a child believe in himself, she would go far and do big things. He always impressed his daughter to be bold and that she could achieve anything if she put her mind to it.
Monali was six when her mother handed her over to her father. She would accompany him on his city tours and help him educate the people of Gairatpur, as they were not very educated. She would learn many new things during their travels. She had also known how to write at a very young age. Her father would start by writing words on the mud and then let Monali write the exact words on the sand the next day. Monali began to make videos for her father when she was seven, and when she turned eight, her father started directing and producing them. She is the recipient of several awards including a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song "Moh Moh Ke Dhaage" from the film Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) and a Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song "Sawaar Loon" from the film Lootera (2013). She was a judge of Zee TV's singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs 2014. She was also an "expert" on Colors TV's Rising Star for two consecutive seasons.
Early life
Thakur was born on 3 November 1985 in a Bengali Brahmin musical family in Calcutta (now Kolkata). Her father Shakti Thakur was a professional singer and actor in Bengali film industry and her sister Mehuli Thakur is a playback singer in Bengal. She has learnt hip-hop and Bharatanatyam and is also a trained salsa dancer.
An alumnus of The Future Foundation School and St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, Thakur started singing in school and college competitions and performing at local functions.
Career
In 1999, she sang the first song of her career in the film Chena Chena under the musical direction of Anupam Dutta and penned by Pulak Bandyopadhyay. It was a Bengali children song titled "Choi Choi Choi Tipi Tipi". The same year, she recorded the title track of Bengali serial Shri Ramkrishna. She received the Best Playback Singer Award at Anandalok Awards for it when she was 14. She rose to popularity after placing ninth in Indian Idol 2.

Thakur comes from a musical family, as her father is Bengali singer and actor Shakti Thakur and her sister Mehuli Thakur-Goswami is also a professional playback singer.
Thakur got her start by singing in school and college competitions and performing at local functions, and then rose to popularity after placing ninth in Indian Idol 2, the Indian version of Pop Idol. She was never in the Bottom 3 until her elimination, and immediately after she was eliminated, judge Anu Malik offered to help her find a future singing opportunity, which turned out to be a playback song in the movie Jaan-E-Mann.
This led in turn to the opportunity to sing two songs for the hit movie Race in 2008 - "Khwab Dekhe (Sexy lady)" and "Zara Zara Touch Me". She was originally scheduled for only one song, but her first recording impressed the film's directors Abbas and Mustan enough for them to book her a second.
"Zara Zara Touch Me" was enormously successful, becoming the fourth-most-played song on Indian radio during the first half of 2008.
She also sang in the movies Golmaal Returns and the forthcoming Mr. Bhatti on Chutti and Dulha Mil Gaya, and is working on her first solo album. As of June 2008, Thakur claimed that the album included a planned nine tracks, of which six had already been written by Thakur and Sachin Gupta, and would be in a blend of rock and classical styles.

Mrunal Thakur (born 1 August 1992) is an Indian actress who predominantly works in Hindi and Telugu films. She began her acting career in television, starring in the soap operas Mujhse Kuchh Kehti...Yeh Khamoshiyaan (2012) and Kumkum Bhagya (2014–2016), which earned her the ITA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
