2005 World Championships in Athletics

10th World Championships in Athletics

The 10th World Championships in Athletics (Finnish: Yleisurheilun maailmanmestaruuskilpailut 2005, Swedish: Världsmästerskapen i friidrott 2005), under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), were held in the Olympic Stadium, Helsinki, Finland (6 August 2005 – 14 August 2005), the site of the first IAAF World Championships in 1983. One theme of the 2005 championships was paralympic events, some of which were included as exhibition events. Much of the event was played in extremely heavy rainfall.

Background

Bidding

The original winning bid for the competition was for London but the cost to build the required stadium at Picketts Lock and host the event was deemed too expensive by the government. UK Athletics suggested to move the host city to Sheffield (using Don Valley Stadium), but the IAAF stated that having London as the host city was central to their winning the bid. The championships bidding process was reopened as a result. The United Kingdom's withdrawal as host was the first case for a major sporting event in a developed country since Denver's withdrawal as host of the 1976 Winter Olympics.

Helsinki was considered by many to be the outsider in the race to host the games with rival bids being presented by Berlin in Germany; Brussels in Belgium, Budapest in Hungary, Moscow in Russia and Rome in Italy.

Opening ceremony

Apocalyptica and Nightwish performed at the opening ceremony of the event over a heavy rainfall. Geir Rönning, Finland's Eurovision Song Contest 2005 entrant, sang "Victory" the official song of the 2005 IAAF World Championships.

Events

With the addition of the women's 3000 metres steeplechase to the schedule, that year's program of events was closer to parity for women and men. With the exception of the 50 km walk the women competed in practically the same events as the men. Two di

DJ Nicholas, birth name Nicholas Vaccianna Eccleston, Born the 29th of October 1980 known in his early years as ‘nameless’ and produced dub plates (personalized songs) for sound systems such as ‘Nemesis and ‘Flawless.’ During this period, he began searching for his true identity; one night, he had a dream in which he saw fire falling from the heavens. In his dream, there was a Rastafarian in his house saying to him that he must know himself. As a result, he sought refuge in the Rastafarian faith believing that Selassie was God and became totally immersed in the Religion. Knowing that he was raised in a Christian home, he prayed for God’s guidance because he was confused about the path he was taking. While studying the bible intensely, he stumbled on Acts 4:12 which reads,”…There is no other name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” This passage made him realize that Jesus Christ is the only way. Praises be to God, he received the word with thanksgiving. As a result, he shaved his hair and turned fully to the Bible for guidance and inspiration. He made the bold step of attending a church crusade at the New Life Assembly of God, Constant Spring Road. There, he got saved and baptized.

With the passion of knowing Christ, came another passion…the passion of gospel music. He pursued his dreams of doing God’s music by approaching Tommy Cowan who recorded his first single ‘Barrier’. Nicholas continued to produce songs such as “Pop off the Word” and collaborated with Kerron Ennis on “Holy Ghost Church.” He has worked on projects for Prodigal Son such as 'Recharge' which played a great part in his earlier development.

Nicholas released his first Album in 2005 titled, ‘DJ Nicholas on the Shout.

He won the Artist of the Year Award and the New Artist of the Year Award at the Maja Awards 2006 in Kingston Jamaica. He also won, New Gospel Artiste Award at the Joe Higgs Music Awards 2006 in Florida, he was also one of the contenders for this year

Artist Name: Koen Duncan

Birth Name: Koen Dwayne Duncan

Birth Place and Date: San Fernando, Trinidad, June 15th, 1983

Official Bio
Koen Duncan's musical journey began at the age of twelve (just 1 year after he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior) when his father introduced him to the saxophone. He then started playing in his church's band that gave him the necessary experience to represent his school (Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive) in San Fest, where he received the Best Performer Award.

As Koen continued to develop his God given talents, he became the youngest member of Broadway Boys International (B.B.I.). Not only did he play the saxophone but he also became one of the group's lead vocalists and voiced the popular tune, “Whole Armour”. Being a part of B.B.I. was where Koen gained most of his experience and exposure and was given the opportunity to put two of his original compositions on the group's debut album. This recording gave him the privilege to minister (playing both saxophone and singing) in Grenada, Barbados and Tobago.

As Koen's musical journey continued with B.B.I., he was blessed with other opportunities to minister at the Trinidad vs. Mexico football match, Pilgrimage (one of the biggest gospel concerts in Trinidad), and share the stage with the likes of Fred Hammond, Stitchie and Chevelle Franklin. Coming to the end of this journey with B.B.I., Koen was given yet another chance to minister in song at the massive T.D Jakes youth rally.

After being with B.B.I. for five years, Koen launched out on his own to further grasp the call of God upon his life. Koen was told if he wanted to improve his song writing, he should learn a string instrument so he learned to play the guitar. This move inspired songs like “Bring Down”, “Count it all Joy” and “Sin No More”. It has definitely played an important role in his song writing today. Approximately ten months after leaving B.B.I., Koen joined Flow Mast
