Thukral and Tagra have been working collaboratively since Their inspiration begins with the reality of old values mixed with their ideas on modern times in the Punjabi culture of Northern India. These versatile artists play on the refined symbolism between advertising, branding, and domestic retail through painting, sculpture, installations and video. T & T project the visual culture of young Indian dreams and aspirations today. From popular heroic imagery to consumer products, many underlying messages in their art tackle important issues of our era in a humorous manner. 

Thukral & Tagra have held solo exhibitions at Art Summit in New Delhi (), Singapore Tyler Print Institute (), Nature Morte in New Delhi ( & ), Chatterjee & Lal in Mumbai (), Bose Pacia, New York () and the Barry Keldoulis Gallery in Sydney (). In , Nature Morte and Bose Pacia presented their solo installation entitled “Adolescere-Domus” in the Art Statements section of Art Basel. Tip-toeing through the web of conscious utopia and dystopia, the world has become a delicate cradle of consequences that look straight in the eye of our actions — good and otherwise. With the reality of climate escalations becoming an everyday occurrence in our forgettable conversations, dialogues and bulletin headlines, what could be the next step to awareness, one that stays and impacts?

Perhaps, art, or indeed. With the environment and perception at its crux, artists Sumir Tagra and Jiten Thukral, also colloquially known as Thukral & Tagra envision Sustaina India, instituting climate awareness and sustainability with Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).

On view until 15th February at Bikaner House, New Delhi, Sustaina India along with Aditya Srinivas Mopidevi sculpts a critical connection between artworks, artists and everyday materials to realign our relationship with the planet.  With “eyes to the ground, heart to the horizon” at its nexus, a cohort of artists, including three Sustaina India fellows Debasmita Ghosh, Manjot Kaur and Rachna Toshniwal celebrate and reignite awareness for the climate through sensorially elevated intel of touch, smell, sound and vision across their works of art.  Thukral & Tagra dwell on it all with ELLE DECOR India, excerpts below…

What was the starting point and initial ideas that gave way to Sustaina India&#;s first edition?

We have been working on climate change and its effects on farming as an ongoing both of us the climate urgencies are at the forefront of many conversations we have been having through our games. CEEW showed interest in our , ten years of climate action and asked us to think of something that can be done as a joint venture. Working with a think tank which has a very strong base of research was just the right kind of partnership. After taking some time to plan our further steps, Sustaina India was born.

    Jiten Thukral was born in and received a BFA from Chandigarh College of Art and his MFA from the Delhi College of Art.

    Sumir Tagra was born in and received a BFA from the Delhi College of Art and later studied at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.

    Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra work collaboratively with a wide range of media including painting, sculpture, installations, interactive games, video, performance and design. Thukral & Tagra work on new formats of public engagement and attempt to expand the scope of what art can do. They break out of the mediated and disciplinary world and create multi-modal sensory and immersive environments. Their earlier work dealt with tropes of migration and motifs of a globally manifested consumer culture. It questioned the provenance of Indian identity and its various articulations. Their recent work has dealt with the interpretation of Indian mythological narratives and symbols in ways that renew and enliven a largely pedantic and static area of cultural material.

    From a pop visual character to a pre-dominantly abstract visual approach and compositional philosophy, Thukral & Tagra constantly shift in terms of their grammar and vocabulary. The abstract suggestions of an everyday experience of architecture and urban design in Gurgaon (Haryana, India) and Chandigarh (Punjab, India) is embedded in their visual language. They have offered sociopolitical commentary that is implicit in their aesthetic for the past fifteen years.

    Designer and artist duo Thukral &#; Tagra’s works are executed in a wide variety of media including graphics, videos, music, interiors, product design, paintings, sculpture and installations. Their quirky, kitsch, pop art-like works focus on the influence of popular western ideologies on India’s deep-rooted cultural heritage. However, the duo’s approach to the subject is refreshingly stylish. Although vibrant and energetic, their compositions raise serious questions about the loss of identity experienced by Indians in their own sub-continent and its repercussions worldwide.

    Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra, branded as Thukral &#; Tagra, have worked as a team since the turn of the millennium. Born in in Jalandar, Thukral completed his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at Chandigarh College of Arts, and his Master’s degree in the same at the Delhi College of Art. Tagra was born in New Delhi in He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art at the Delhi College of Art and then went on to postgraduate studies in Communication Design at the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.
