Modesto Alex "Mitch" Maidique (pronounced /maɪdiːkɛ/; born March 20, ) is a Cuban-American electrical engineer, businessman, and educator. He was the fourth president of Florida International University (FIU), a public university in the United States, whose main campus is named after him. Appointed in , Maidique was the longest-serving university president in Florida and the second longest-serving research university president in the United States . On November 14, , Maidique presented his resignation to the FIU Board of trustees. On April 25, , Mark B. Rosenberg was chosen to succeed Maidique and assumed office on August 3,

In , Maidique had a dispute with long-time University supporter Herbert Wertheim over the naming of the medical school building, which resulted in the revocation of a $20 million donation. Wertheim had initially offered to donate the funds to have the medical facility named in his honor. However, Wertheim wanted to pay the donation over a period of months, and Maidique insisted that it would have to be paid in a lump sum in order for the school to get crucial matching funds from the state. During discussions of the matter, Maidique told Wertheim that he was getting the naming rights "on the cheap", and that they were really worth $ million, prompting Wertheim to withdraw his offer.
On November 14, , Maidique announced his resignation from his post as President of FIU. On June 12, , FIU's board of trustees voted to rename the University Park campus to the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

A co-author of Energy Future, a New York Times bestseller on energy, Dr. Maidique has been CEO of two high-technology companies: Analog Devices Semiconductor, now Analog Devices, a Fortune company; and Collaborative Research, now Genome Therapeutics; and he was a senior partner in Hambrecht & Quist Venture Partners, at the time the world’s largest venture capital firm. Unlikely beginnings
An abandoned airfield is an unusual place for the birth of a university. But in the summer of , founding FIU president Chuck Perry gathered three leaders who would help him create his vision.
From that single building on that abandoned airfield, FIU has grown to be one of the largest universities in the country. The spirit of entrepreneurship born on that summer day thrives at today’s FIU .
The vision becomes reality
Our beginnings were unconventional; our opening day in continued that trend. With 5, students, it was the largest opening enrollment in U.S. collegiate history.
The typical student entering FIU that year was 25, attending school full-time and working full-time. Eighty percent of the student body had just graduated from Miami-Dade Community College. Forty-three percent were married. FIU was far from your typical university.
The Maidique years – growth and progress
In August , the Board of Regents unanimously approved Modesto A. “Mitch” Maidique as FIU’s fourth president. The former Harvard Business School professor and high-tech entrepreneur had a clear vision and goals for the University.
Some of his major accomplishments:
• enrollment increased from 16, to more than 34,
• tremendous programmatic growth- more than degree programs in 19 colleges and schools
• FIU admitted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society , the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society, the youngest member of the society and one of only five in the state of Florida ()
• FIU College of Law – the first public law school in South Florida – opened in
• Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine – South Florida’s only public medical
