Brenda & the Tabulations were an AmericanR&Bgroup, formed in 1966 in Philadelphia originally composed of Brenda Payton, Eddie L. Jackson, Maurice Coates, and Jerry Jones.

History

The group had a distinctive, almost doo-wop sound, especially at the start featuring Payton's sweet occasionally rough-edged vocals with background male harmonies. The line-up changed around 1971 with the original three men departing. Two female backing singers (Pat Mercer and Deborah Martin) were brought into the group.

Brenda and the Tabulations had two major US hits: "Dry Your Eyes", which hit number 20 in 1967, and "Right On the Tip of My Tongue", which hit number 23 in 1971. The latter was produced by Van McCoy. Several other songs became hits or moderate hits on the US soul singles chart from the late 1960s to the late 1970s including "Right on the Tip of My Tongue".

The group released three albums: Dry Your Eyes on Dionn Records (1967), Brenda and the Tabulations on Top & Bottom Records (1970), and I Keep Coming Back For More on Chocolate City/Casablanca (1977), although by the time of the last album, Brenda Payton was relatively a solo act while keeping the group name. The group signed with Epic Records in 1972 and released four singles. One of the Epic singles, "One Girl Too Late", charted on the soul chart.

Brenda & the Tabulations are one of many recording artists referenced in the song "Life Is a Rock (But the Radio Rolled Me)" by the studio group Reunion. Payton, born on October 24, 1945, died on June 14, 1992, aged 46. Eddie L. Jackson died on May 3, 2010, from a brain aneurysm at the age of 63.

Payton (Hill), born in the city on October 24, 1945, composer/ guitarist Eddie L. Jackson, born in 1947 in Forest City, North Carolina, Maurice Coates and Jerry Jones. The background singers were Bernard Murphy, Pat Mercer, and Deborah Martin.

through Dionn Records including the single sharing the same title which became their major work. “Dry Your Eyes” peaked at no. 8 on the Billboard R&B chart and no. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967. “Just Once in a Lifetime,” also from the album, reached no. 41 R&B and no. 97 on the Billboard Hot 100. Both compositions were penned by Brenda Payton & Maurice Coates.

Also from that album, “Just Once in A Lifetime,” peaked at no.41 R&B and no. 97 Billboard Hot 100. “When You’re Gone” reached no. 27 R&B and no. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Four years later in 1971, the ensemble’s single “Right on the Tip of My Tongue,” written by the composer Van McCoy, peaked at no. 5 R&B, no. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also became an international hit, peaking at no. 53 in Australia and no. 83 in Canada. The song was recognized as no. 97 on Billboard magazine’s Top 100 singles of 1971. Two years later, in 1973, the group charted again with “One Girl Too Late” and “Magic of Your Love” on the flip side which reached no. 48 on the R&B chart.

The group had a series of hit singles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainly in the US soul charts and on small independent labels, Dionn and Top & Bottom, operated by the group's manager, Gilda Woods. However, two were big US pop hits: their first release, "Dry Your Eyes" (Pop #20, R&B #2) on Dionn in 1967 and "Right On The Tip Of My Tongue" (Pop #23, R&B #5) in 1971. The first was written by Payton with group member Maurice Coates and produced by Bob Finiz and the latter written and produced by Van McCoy.

The group signed with Epic/Columbia in 1972 but, despite continuing to work with producer Van McCoy, the four singles released were relatively unsuccessful, with only "One Girl Too Late" managing to chart.
