Formed within just few months in , Dschinghis Khan was the product of the disco boom and following on the heels of other German-produced bands such as Boney M., Arabesque, and Silver Convention. Their songs were based on historical people and places. The group was formed by music producer Ralph Siegel AKA Mr. Eurovision. Siegel was apparently obsessed with making the next ABBA. Their name is the German spelling of "Genghis Khan," the name of the song they sang in their introductory performance in the Eurovision Song Contest. While they didn't win Eurovision, the group achieved great success in Europe, Russia, Israel, Australia, and Japan.

The group broke up in the mids. After the break-up, lead dancer Louis Hendrick Potgieter (known to Youtube users as Dancing Santa Jesus) returned to his native South Africa to manage a hotel. He contracted HIV and died of AIDS in For this reason he's been considered gay, though evidence (photos of him and his ex-fiancee, pop/jazz/disco singer Madeleine Davis, as well as comments from his sister) disprove that.

Wolfgang Heichel, the youngest member of Dschinghis Khan, introduced his wife Henriette Heichel to Siegel to help him completing the group cast. The two divorced in , although both are taking part in modern incarnations of Dschinghis Khan.

Steve Bender, "the bald one" that looks like Destro, left the group in on the advice of his doctor and because of backpain, which made dancing hard for him; an unofficial version has it that he had some arguments with the producers. He returned for a reunion concert in (sans the baldness), but died six months later from cancer.

Leslie Mandoki, the drummer, fled to Germany from his native Hungary, as the Commies wouldn't let him keep his mane and sing whatever he wanted. He is now an established jazz/rock session drummer, and it's better not to mention his tenure in the Khan during interviews.

Several bands are called Genghis Khan.

1) Genghis Khan (previously called Killer ) was a former name of NWOBHM band Tokyo Blade. Under this name they released an EP Double Dealin ().

2) Genghis Khan, known as Dschinghis Khan back home in Germany, was part of the 'Neue Deutsche Welle' (New German Wave) genre of popular music of the s and s. Inspired by how well Boney M went with its hit Rasputin, German producer Ralph Seigel decided to form a band that shared the same hallmarks - extravagent costumes, a pernacious disco beat, synthesizers, and lyrics concerned with people and events historical. The group of four men and two women that Seigel put together failed to win at a German talent show in , singing about the Mongol warlord (Let's get some more vodka, ha-ha-ha, because we are Mongols, ha-ha-ha ). However their clothes stood out (see if you don't believe me) and they were able to get enough audience appeal to dare to put together an album.

Must be historical events that moves vinal, Seigel surmised, and so the band named themselves as Genghis Khan and started to research various legends for inspiration. Like samurais, nomads in the Sahara, ancient Rome(Romulus and Remus the two brothers, raised among the wolves like no others), the Incas (Machu Picchu, Machu Picchu, where the secrets are at home), and one story where the son of Genghis Khan dreams of being the drummer of a boy band instead of leading the Golden Horde (wants to drum and sing-oh, just like his idol Ringo). In this piece 'Rocking Son of Dschinghis Khan' the Mongol leader eventually gives leave to his son, obviously impressed with his drum solo (You're a rocker, you're a roller, you're a rocking man, and you are my favourite son).

"Dschinghis Khan" (German pronunciation:[ˌdʒɪŋɡɪsˈkaːn]; "Genghis Khan") is a song recorded by German disco group Dschinghis Khan, with music composed by Ralph Siegel and lyrics by Bernd Meinunger. It represented West Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest , held in Jerusalem, and was released as the first single from the group's debut album, Dschinghis Khan.

Background

Conception

The song was written by the prolific duo of composer Ralph Siegel and lyricist Bernd Meinunger, and owes a considerable debt to disco music, specifically of the Boney M. tradition. As the name suggests, it is in praise of the titular Mongol warrior, with verses extolling his military ("and about his enemies he only laughed / because nobody could resist his strength") and sexual ("he fathered seven children in one night") prowess. Indeed, the entirety of his band are the subjects of this paean, being described as exceptional drinkers with a devil-may-care attitude to life ("and the devil gets us early enough").

Eurovision

On 17 March , "Dschinghis Khan" competed in Vorentscheid , the national final organized by Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) for ARD to select their song and performer for the 24th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The song won the competition so it became the West German entry for the contest. In addition to the German original version, the group also released the song in English.
