State in Culiacán, Mexico

Sinaloa (Spanish pronunciation:[sinaˈloa]), officially the Estado Libre y Soberano de Sinaloa (English: Free and Sovereign State of Sinaloa), is one of the 31 states which, along with Mexico City, compose the Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided into 18 municipalities, and its capital city is Culiacán Rosales.

It is located in northwest Mexico and is bordered by the states of Sonora to the northwest, Chihuahua to the north and Durango to the east, both across the Sierra Madre Occidental; and Nayarit to the southeast. To the west, Sinaloa faces Baja California Sur, across the Gulf of California. The state covers an area of 58,328 square kilometers (22,521 sq mi) and includes the islands of Palmito Verde, Palmito de la Virgen, Altamura, Santa María, Saliaca, Macapule, and San Ignacio. In addition to the capital city, the state's important cities include Mazatlán and Los Mochis.

Etymology

Sinaloa combines two words from the Cahita language: sina ('pithaya plant'), and lobola ('rounded'); "sinalobola" was shortened to "sinaloa". This most popular etymology is attributed to Eustaquio Buelna. Another etymology attributed to Pablo Lizárraga is Mexica cintli ('dry corn and cob') and ololoa ('to pile up'), and to locative, "where they pile up or store corn on the cob." Yet another etymology from Héctor R. Olea combinsa Cahia sina with the locative "ro" from the Purépecha language and "a" from Aztec atl ('water'), thus "place of pithayas in the water.

History

Sinaloa belongs to the northern limit of Mesoamerica. A narcocorrido (Spanish pronunciation:[naɾkokoˈriðo], "narco-corrido" or drug ballad) is a subgenre of the Regional Mexicancorrido (narrative ballad) genre, from which several other genres have evolved. This type of music is heard and produced on both sides of the Mexico–US border. It uses a danceable, polka, waltz or mazurka rhythmic base.

The first corridos that focus on drug smugglers—the narco comes from "narcotics"—have been dated by Juan Ramírez-Pimienta to the 1930s. Early corridos (non-narco) go back as far as the Mexican Revolution of 1910, telling the stories of revolutionary fighters. Music critics have also compared narcocorrido lyrics and style to gangster rap and mafioso rap.

Narcocorrido lyrics refer to particular events and include real dates and places. The lyrics tend to speak approvingly of illegal activities, mainly drug trafficking.

History

This genre of music is the evolution of traditional corrido ballads of the Mexican-US border region, which stemmed from the 16th-century Spanish genre of romance. History

The label was formed by Angel who previously ran a fencing company. The label's first signing was with Gerardo Ortíz in 2010. Originally, DEL Records had a partnership with Anaheim, California based VIP Music. The label is currently distributed Independently.

In April 2015, DEL Records donated $12,200 to the Rowland Unified School District in Rowland Heights, California in order to help with their area student and teacher scholarships.

In 2016, DEL Records received six Billboard Latin Music Awards including those for Regional Mexican Airplay Label of the Year, Regional Mexican Airplay Imprint of the Year and Regional Mexican Albums Imprint of the Year.
